Head coach Brandon Wilkes didn’t come away from Maur Hill-Mount Academy’s 14-8 loss to Doniphan West Friday convinced his team is going to win a game this year.

He was convinced the Ravens are going to win a bunch of games.

He’s not alone.

New league; same rivalry

Even the fans were sweating it out Tuesday when former Big 7 league rivals Maur Hill-Mount Academy and Atchison County Community High School squared off in the first volleyball match as members of the Delaware Valley League.

Sure, it was because the air conditioning wasn’t working, but it was still intense.

BC's shines in shutout opener

If the Benedictine College Lady Ravens continue to play like they did in their 3-0 season-opening win over Hannibal-LaGrange Friday night, fans of the red and black are in for a doozy of a season.

The scary thing is, they could get better.

AHS wins game one

For the first time in head coach Ned Price’s tenure, the Atchison High School soccer team beat Highland Park.

The Topeka Class 5A school has always come out on top when the two square off to kick off the season, but Friday’s contest was a different story.

Immaculata welcomes MH-MA to the DVL with 9-1 whooping

The Maur Hill-Mount Academy soccer team has played Immaculata before, but Friday’s season-opener was the first time the two squads faced off as league rivals.

The Raiders will go down as the first team to beat new Delaware Valley League entrant MH-MA after a 9-1 stomping.

So much for a polite welcome.

ACCHS, MH-MA prepare for the DVL

The Atchison Senior A’s were back on the interstate Thursday, making the return trip from the AAA legion baseball state tournament in Dodge City.

Especially head coach Dave Hager.

Pittsburg piles it on in the ninth

With powerhouses like Pittsburg, Olathe and Emporia drawing the most attention in the AAA state tournament bracket, not too many people were giving the Atchison Senior A’s much credit heading into Wednesday’s first round in Dodge City.

Even though the Seniors lost 16-8 to Pittsburg, Atchison head coach Dave Hager said his team certainly raised some eyebrows.

A's with nothing to lose

The Atchison Senior A’s are going to state again, but things are a little different this year.

They don’t have the dominant pitching of a season ago, nor do they have the expectations.

In a way, the A’s are just enjoying the ride — albeit a five-hour road trip to Dodge City.

Cabbage cap kids book state ticket

Call them the Cabbage Cap Kids.

The Atchison Senior A’s, many of whom hid leaves of cabbage under their caps and helmets for good luck, dragged out a 12-5 win over the Leavenworth Diamond Jaxx Saturday afternoon at Amelia Earhart Stadium. The win gave the A’s their second straight AAA zone tournament crown, and qualified them for the state tournament in Dodge City.

When it officially ends is completely up to the player

Senior A's prepare for zone with nine innings against Falls City

The Atchison Senior A’s closed out the regular season in a whimper thanks to a 9-2 loss to Falls City on Sunday.

Nonetheless, a 5-14 season has not diminished head coach Dave Hager’s goals for the upcoming AAA zone tournament.

He’s just hoping his players feel the same way.

Lansing zones out Atchison Junior A's

LANSING — The Atchison Junior A’s had the opportunity to advance to state fall in their lap.

Seneca edges Senior A's in a doozy

First-place Seneca visited last-place Atchison Tuesday, but even though the visitors came away with the 14-11 win, it was hard to tell who was where in the Northeast Kansas League standings.

Post 21 and the Senior A’s committed just about every mistake you can make in baseball.

Psychic octopus gets me thinking

Does anyone have an octopus I could borrow?

You may have heard about this, either by a screaming CNN anchor (why are they always, always shouting?) or an unfunny SportsCenter anchor (why do they all seem to be doing impressions of Bob Saget as host of America’s Funniest Home Videos?).

Atchison tags Sabetha in rematch

On second thought, that brutal regular season schedule might not be such a bad thing.

If Friday’s 6-1 win over Sabetha was any indication, the Atchison Senior A’s can play much better at home, and Amelia Earhart Field just so happens to be the site of the team’s AAA zone tournament.

New MH-MA prez not wasting any time

New Maur Hill-Mount Academy president Phil Baniewicz made a lot of promises when he took over on April 1.

Time is of the essence for MH-MA in Leavenworth tournament
