Two Benedictine College faculty members were given honors earlier this month as Dr. Kim Shankman was named Educator of the Year and Dr. Frank Kessler was given the “Do Something Beautiful for God” award.
Shankman, the dean of the college and a professor in the department of political science, was nominated by college students, faculty and staff for the highest honor a faculty member at BC can receive.
One drowned horse manifested into a 45-year-old Atchison woman’s no contest plea to a misdemeanor count of animal cruelty.
Lynn Westmoreland entered her plea Wednesday in Atchison County District Court after she waived her right to the scheduled trial. The plea arose from the Feb. 20 discovery of a horse she owned that had fallen into a covered, in-ground swimming pool in the Sumner area.

Despite what authorities believed to be life-threatening injury, a man recently beaten along Main Street in Rushville, Mo. has been released from the hospital.
Col. Bill Puett, of Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office, said the 50-year-old victim was released Friday from a Kansas City area hospital. Meanwhile, investigative reports have been submitted to Buchanan County Prosecutor’s Office.
