Hollister pleads innocence, trial to proceed

A 58-year-old rural Sabetha man pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a capital murder charge and will stand trial  in connection with the homicide of Patricia Kimmi in Atchison County.
Roger Hollister is tentatively headed for jury trial at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30, barely more than one year after the Nov. 6, 2009 disappearance of 58-year-old Ms. Kimmi.

Sex charge for Zacharias
Unlawful touching of an incapacitated female acquaintance earlier this summer resulted in felony sex charges filed against a 29-year Atchison man.
James C. Zacharias heard the formal complaint Friday in Atchison County District Court that included two felony counts of aggravated sexual battery that stemmed from a June 30 incident. He remains in jail custody in lieu of $10,000 bond.

Suspect's reckless course backtracks to Missouri
A 25-year-old Atchison man waived his right to extradition Friday in district court to face a complaint of probation violation in connection with a Buchanan County, Mo. matter.
Jeremy W. McAfee indicated that he understood that the actual extradition would involve a lengthier process, but signed the necessary paperwork to speed things along.

Area schools show steady head counts
The 2010-11 academic year is approaching full speed for elementary and secondary schools throughout Atchison County, and most report enrollments only slightly varied from last year. Figures will not be official until later this month, when there could be changes in head counts.

Cummings man faces Brown County manslaughter charge
Brown County charges were recently filed against a 50-year-old Cummings man in connection with a Oct. 22, 2009 head-on collision that claimed the life of a Sabetha woman south of Fairview.
Kenneth E. Callaway faces a felony charge of involuntary manslaughter while driving under the influence of alcohol in connection with the unintentional death of 54-year-old Emma Light.

County budget work continues
Despite efforts to trim the proposed 2011 budget in hopes to avoid a mill levy increase, county leaders seemingly agreed Wednesday their objective might be out of reach. As a result of their labor, they pared the projected levy to 50.703 mills, compared to the current levy at 46.658 reflected on the 2010 budget.

Truck parking concerns have again delayed action on the Paolucci Restaurant & Lounge request for a second-story balcony facing Third Street.

A revised site plan was presented, but the request tabled by members of the Planning Commission/Zoning Board at their Wednesday meeting.

Ravens again flying high
Students of all ages are back in classrooms throughout Atchison and the county, with one educational institution announcing a 2010-11 enrollment record. Not the first time for such a distinction.

That growth champion is Benedictine College with record-setting student numbers for the 13th straight year.

North headworks on bypass
Due to a power failure and damage of pumps at city of Atchison north headworks Tuesday, the wastewater system was put on bypass, according to Trey Cocking, city manager.

It was unknown when normal operation would resume.

There have been recurring problems at the site, which is targeted for improvements.

Hollister evidence includes DNA links
As the first day of evidence presented Tuesday against a 58-year-old rural Sabetha man closed, it remained unclear how much his wife can share under oath in connection with the homicide of Patricia Kimmi.
Roger Hollister is poised to hear his wife Rebecca testify at 9 a.m. Wednesday in Atchison County District Court in connection with the capital murder charge filed against her husband. The complaint alleges that Mr. Hollister murdered Ms Kimmi according to contract or an agreement.

COMMENTARY: Evidence looks strong
After one day of evidentiary hearings, some plot lines have developed in the Patricia Kimmi murder case.

Keep in mind that I am a layperson. An unbiased, objective observer, not unlike you would find in a typical jury. I have no connection with the Kimmi family, and haven’t held so much as a conversation with any of the interested and involved parties (aside from a few comments from prosecutor Jerry Kuckelman).

Man trapped underwater by mower survives
An Atchison man trapped in the waters of Atchison State Fishing Lake for about an hour Monday survived, partially  due to what witnesses said was a log that kept his head above the surface. More than a dozen people also launched a determined rescue effort.

Nelson Curry, 58, an employee of Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, was operating a lawn mower near a steep bank on the south side of the lake at about 4:30 p.m. when he lost control.

Atchison youth hurt in fall
Life Net helicopter crews were busy in Atchison Mnnday, transporting victims of two different accidents to two different hospital just hours apart.
Life Net transported a juvenile from a temporary landing spot at Benedictine College to a Kansas City hospital shortly after 7 p.m., just hours after taking Nelson Curry to the name of the juvenile, who was injured in a fall, has not been officially released.

Judge refuses to lower rape case bond
A bond reduction was denied Monday in district court for a 21-year-old Muscotah man who remained in jail custody in lieu of $100,000 bond in wake of sex charges that involved a pre-adolescent female.
The case against Lennon Barber was continued until 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13 in Atchison County District Court on felony charges of aggravated rape and aggravated sodomy.

Tractor owners in Labor Day of love
Tractors will again travel a three-county route on Labor Day to benefit the Angelman Syndrome Foundation.

The 5th Annual Northeast Kansas Tractor Cruise will form at Everest Middle School between 8-10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 6. Registration will be $25 per tractor, and gentleman and ladies will start their engines at 10:15.

DNA links Hollister to Kimmi death - BREAKING
DNA evidence connecting Roger Hollister to the death of Patricia Kimmi will be presented during an evidentiary hearing this afternoon.
Atchison County Attorney Jerry Kuckelman reported that evidence will be presented during the hearing at the county courthouse which confirms the human remains found during a search several months ago on Hollister family property are those of Ms. Kimmi.
Additionally, Mr. Kuckelman said DNA tests confirm that a money clip found during initial searches after her disappearance contained traces of Ms. Kimmi's blood.
Also found at the scene was a baseball cap, which has been confirmed as Mr. Hollister's property.
This evidence and more will be presented throughout the afternoon as the evidentiary hearing continues. Information on the proceedings will be posted as it becomes available.

Thieves make off with goods
Local authorities work amid two ongoing theft investigations to unravel clues that they hope might lead to arrests and convictions of persons responsible in connection with the seemingly unrelated cases.
Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson said the first occurred Thursday night when someone entered a residential garage in the 800 block of King Street.

A westbound junket Monday to a location near Larkinburg prompted a joint meeting between county minds to discuss road and bridge improvements.
Atchison and Jackson county leaders discussed two different matters while on site at the county line along the convergence of Z Road in Jackson County and Allen Road in Atchison County.
